We have a couple of users in our network that are suddenly having problems with opening Excel files. When they double click on the file, Excel will open to show the toobars at the top and the blue border. However, where the spreadsheet itself should be, you just see the underlying desktop wallpaper. Does anyone have any reason why this would happen? We have uninstalled and reinstalled Excel on one user's computer. It seemed to solve the problem for a couple of weeks, but now it's doing it again. Thanks!

I've had similar experiences and took it as a sign to call it a day. ;-)

Seriously though, here are a few things to check:

Background processes? We've got an admin scan for viruses that kicks off at noon which practically consumes all available resources for half an hour. The file will eventually load, but is agonizingly s-l-o-w.

File may be corrupt?

Try opening Excel first, then File >> Open >> and select it.

This just in from google groups - microsoft.public.excel.crashesgpfs:

"I had installed and uninstalled a Palm program called
MiniCalc. Even though I had uninstalled the program, it
left a file in the XLStart directory called pimc.xla - deleting the file enabled excel to open normally!! Thanks to Lisa Rinderknecht"
