We have linked Excel Files, and when a different user opens the file, the links break and default to C:\Winnt. Does anyone know why these links keep breaking and how we can prevent it?

I need a bit more info on this.

How are these files being opened? ( are they being launched from within an e-mail system? )

What version of Excel are you using?

Glenn.

1). Office 2000
2). Opening files either through Excel/file/open, or through "file manager" (My Doc's and drilling to the network location and double clicking).

Thanks for the help.

BOb

Bob, you say "file manager", do you really mean this, or do you mean Windows Explorer?

Glenn.
( I haven't had any trouble with Excel links for Excel 2000 docs yet, when opening from within Excel, using File/Open )

P.S. If someone is launching these Excel files from an e-mail system, and then doing a File/Save As ... afterwards, then this will corrupt links, as compared to detaching from an e-mail and then opening the file.

No, not launching via e-mail. Either through the application, or through file manager (My Computer). Most likely 95% of the time through the application, File/Open...

OK then, it may have something to do with your Alternate Startup location.

This is taken from Microsoft Knowledgebase article Q214361 ( Link Path Changes to Xlstart Folder )...

CAUSE
This problem occurs when you do both of the following:

You create links to another workbook and save the files in the Alternate startup file location folder.

-and-

You delete the Alternate startup file location setting in the Options dialog box.

Is this any help?
Glenn.

If you sort data that has links, the links don't get sorted with the corresponding data.
