Excel Linking Formula Not Updating. VPN Problem?

A friend has called with an interesting problem that I hope some one here can help with.

Some folks work at home and VPN to the Office in Charlotte.

They have an Excel workbook (QReport.xls) that includes linking formulas to another Excel file. Both files are in Charlotte.

The employees spend a lot of time in the source file, and at the end of the quarter, open QReport.xls, answer Yes to Update Links, but the links don't update and the data is old. Only the VPN people have this problem.

The employee can be in Nashville looking at the file at the same time the customer in Memphis is VPN'ed and looking at the same file, but the customer sees the correct, updated data while the employee sees old bad data. This made me think maybe this was a caching thing and not an Excel thing at all.

If I understood her correctly, to force the data to update, they open the source file and click on each worksheet tab.

Can some one offer advice? Thanks. I did try the VPN forum, but did not get any replies.
