excel how to get a customized commandbar.button.icon

using excel 2003

I have made a customized commandbar.
Now I like to add an customized icon to the buttons on this commandbar.

Manually I can use Tools/Toolbars/Commands/Modify selection/edit button image to create an icon which excel 'remembers'.

Yet I can't find a way to accomplish this in vba

It seems to me if you can do it manually you can do it in vba so what is the way to do it ?
