For some reason, when I am using Excel and use a function it does not work.

Simple example....
A1 = 3
B1 = 2
C1 = =A1+B1, but shows as "=A1+B1" instead of 5

It has worked fine in the past. I am sure its something simple, but I can't figure it out.

Hi,

Check out Tools/Options - General Tab - Window Options - Uncheck FORMULAS

A few possible reasons.

First, press Ctrl]+[`] (the button to the left of [1] and above [Tab]). This is the shortcut for Tools > Options > View > Formulas.

Also make sure that the cell isn't formatted as text.

If that doesn't do it, was this file imported from another program?

If by chance you have inserted a column to the right of a set of text fields, then the column you just inserted will have taken on the same formats and will be formatted as text.

In that case, as John has said, simply reformat as general or something esle that can be numeric and re-enter your data (or format and then just hit F2 and ENTER)

That is sooooo useful to know! Actually, I already knew it, subconsciously, but stating it like that makes it my Number 1 Tip of this week! [medal] + STAR

In XL 2003 this is indicated by a small Icon with the Format brush. You can choose if you want to format your inserted column the same as the right or left column
