Hello all,
I hope this isn't too confusing but I'll do my best.

I'm trying to enter a formula into a cell that will return the value of another cell in another workbook. The cell will always be in the same column, but the row can change frequently.

I'd like to be able to just type a row number into a cell and the formula would reference the correct row and column. I guess it would be a parameter.

Is this possible?

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

Use the INDIRECT function.

Thanks for the response, Skip. Being a complete novice with Excel I'm not sure how to use that. Hopefully here's a better explanation of what I'm trying to do.

Let's just take something simple like =A1+A2. What I'd like it to be is =A1+A.....and it would get the row number from a completely different cell.

The formula would be used many places and all the user would have to do is type in one number in one cell and they would all populate with info from their respective columns on that row.

Hard to visualize what you are trying to do, can you post a sample?

You don't say what version - I'm using XL2002 on this machine, so taking Skip's advice, in the box that says "Type a question for help" I type INDIRECT and hit Enter. This gives me a list of options, the second of which is "Help on the INDIRECT function". I click on this and the 5th example is the exact scenario you describe.

Regards
