Excel formula display formatting

Probably a simple question but I can't find the answer...

Can the way a formula is displayed be changed? Specifically from relative to absolute? One of my users is very adamant about having the forumlas displayed as simple as possible (=A5+A1) rather than some relative structure where it's using (-4) to reference A1 from A5.
 
Are you using R1C1?

If so, you can turn it off at Tools > Options, General tab
