I try to open an Excel file and it gives me the error "File can not be accessed. The file my be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

I know the file is on local machine not on the server. The properties of the file at the bottom that is checked is archive and that is it.

I have tried to locate the file on server and is not there.

Anyway to change file from read only and what is causing this to come up with read only. I have used file yesterday and was fine.

I run Windows NT sp5.

Any suggestions?

The file itself may be damaged. If you've got a utility that repairs files, like Norton, you could try it on the file in question and see if it works. It may or may not help.

If it's on a network folder, try copying another file into the folder or seeing if you can open a different one. Sometimes the permissions in a network folder can get turned off. If that's the case, then that's a Help Desk issue.

Otherwise, always make a couple back ups of the document. If it's particularly long, save it as a new file every couple of hours (File 1, File 2). While this may seem redundant, you'll be grateful if a large document suddenly stops working and you only need to go back a couple versions (mine was a 200 page Word document that stopped working).

Linda Adams
Garridon@aol.com
<a href= Adams Online
I'm a professional writer, published internationally.
