I am attempting to subtract periods of time (start time from end time) but when I have times that show AM and PM or proceed to conclude the next day I don't receive a good calculated answer. I am looking for the total duration for each incident. See example that follows. How can I achieve the proper result?

Create Date and time Resolved Date and time
--------------------------------------------------------
1/4/2004 6:35:52 AM 1/4/2004 4:17:28 PM
1/4/2004 8:07:58 PM 1/8/2004 8:18:00 AM

One of 2 issues
1) you do not have proper dates
2) you need to use a format of [HH]:mm:ss as your times are going over 24 hours. Also, it would be helpful if you specified the kind of result you are getting more specifically than "a good calculated answer"
For the examples you have given, what result do you get ??

rjgthree,

1) Check to see if yo have REAL Date/Time value (Format/Cells-Number Tab)

A REAL Date/Time VALUE is just a NUMBER, like right now is 38302.67943.

You can the FORMAT this Date/Time Value in any number of ways AM/PM or without. The VALUE does not change -- just what is DISPLAYED.

The INTEGRAL part of a Date/Tiem Value is DAYS since 1/1/1900. The FRACTIONAL part is Time as a protion of a day. For instance .5 is 12 PM; .75 is 6 PM.
