Excel crashing after windows update

Hopefully I can get some quick remedies on this problem. After applying all critical and security updates to a w2k machine, there are severe problems in tryingto save a file in excel. Trying to execute this routine results in the application crashing. A 'File-Save' results in an instant crash whereas a 'File-Save as' also results in a crash but on rebooting shows the file as having been saved.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
