Excel and Word 2003 take forever to open a file

Excel and Word 2003 take forever when the drop down key in the look in is used to get a file. This doesn’t happen with Excel and Word 2000.

This is usually because there is an invalid path in the file list - usually an old mapped drive that is invalid.
