A colleague used to be able to input a date (UK format) using the numeric keypad i.e. 1.9.3 and the cell would display 01-Sep-2003 however, since some problems occured and IT did whatever it was they do, she can no longer enter a date this way. I've tried various formats both date and custome but cannot get excel to recognise 1.9.3 as a date input. Can anyone tell me how to achieve this please?

Never had to try as this way of entering the date has only been done for the last couple of years, sorry.

Check date separator and short/long date formats in control panel>regional settings>date tab. A universal date separator is "/".
