This I thought was a standard feature of all IF statements but I can not get it to work in Excel. Is it Excel just can not do this?

Field Q2 has "Room in Shared House"

I want to use the IF statement;

IF Q2="*Shared*","Yes","No"

But it always return False on the Test. Is it Excel can not locate a sub part of the Text?

nope - you are just not using the right function
=if(iserror(find("shared",Q2)),"NOT FOUND","FOUND")
