have a user who has some merged cells - when attempting to select one column within the merged range it selects all columns - cannot replicate on any other pc - is there a setting to change somewhere ?????

Hi,

Select all the cells as you have done previously, which will include the merged cells.
Use Format, Cells, Alignment, and under Horizontal select the bottom entry "Centre Across Selection", then ensure the Merged Cells box is clear, and select OK.
Repeat above but select "General" this time.
The merged cells will now be gone and your Horizontal format will be set to the default.

Most Excel experts do not use merged cells for the very type of problem you have - a much better way to go is to use "Centre Across Selection" which does what most people want without the problems.

Good Luck!

You also must be using an older version of Excel, say Escel 97. In later versions of Excel, merging will still allow you to select just one column which contains merged cells, and since you aren't able to duplicate this on other PCs, my guess is the PCs you are testing this on are loaded with a later version of Excel. Incidentally, Peter is right: merged cells can be problematic, not just in formatting cases, but in formulas as well. If I merge cells, and then write a formula which makes reference to the merged cells, it looks like my formula is evaluating the whole range of merged cells, but in reality it is only using the upper left hand corner of the range. Best not to merge unless absolutely necessary.

i am of course grateful for your reply but please do not assume that i do not know which version of excel i am using. while i am the first to understand that the basics need to be checked i would not have titled the post excel 2003 if we were using 97.

apologies for the rant but it had to be said

if my post wasn't clear then i apologise

No offense taken - LOL!
I was just checking to see if your user was using a different version than you are since you mentioned that you couldn't duplicate it on any other PC...
