you need to have the proper font installed on your machine. google for "upc fonts", "barcode fonts" etc. then install in your font directory. you may have to reboot, but then you should be able to change the font of a cell to the barcode.
have done this in office 2k no problem with code 39 fonts. just make sure you get a true type font.

i'm not in the office at the moment, but if i remember correctly this is what i did:
change a1 to the barcode font. put your numeric sequence in a2. in a1 enter "=a2". you may have to increase the size of a1 to show the barcode.
