I'm getting an error when double clicking on a column to make it fit to the text. The error does not have a specific code it just shuts excel down. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? what was the fix? thanks.
There's nothing specific about your problem in Microsoft's Knowledge Base, so you probably ought to try to isolate the problem.
1) Does it occur with just one workbook--or any workbook? If it is just the one workbook, then look for file corruption--use Excel 2002 or 2003 "Open and repair" tool to repair the file (available from the File...Open menu item by clicking on the arrow to the right of the Open button).
2) Can you use the Format...Column...Autofit Selection menu item successfully? This should do the same job as double-clicking the right edge of the column header.
3) Chip Pearson provides a good set of Excel troubleshooting tips in
The format...column....autofit gives the same error. The goes something like "MS excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and it gives the options to debug or close. if I choose close excel closes completely. If I chose debug it says "the instrustionat 0x300f2e83" referenced memory at "0x0000000a". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program etc. This doesn't happen for existing spreadsheets on the network only new ones that are created.
