Hi
I run Excel 2000 on Windows XP

Can anyone think of a way for a spreadsheet to 'count' those cells within a column which have content - regardless of what that content is, i.e. if column A has a value either text or numerical in say 6 rows it would return a value of 6, column B may only have content in 4 rows, etc, etc.

At the moment I've created 6 extra columns with
=IF(A2=0,"",1). The total of that column is then returned to A1. I noticed that there's a 'count' function but I couldn't seem to get it to work as it seems to be referring to numbers within a range not just any content?

Please see your original post - use COUNTA as opposed to COUNT Rgds

Hi Geoff

Brilliant! Will really have to buy myself a book so I can sit and read up on what Excel can really do for me. I've had access to the programme for years but only really started to try and get it to work more intelligently for me in the last few months. I was told a spreadsheet is just a calculator - but clearly this is a pretty watered down version of its function. My mind is buzzing with possibilities!!! Can I ask what the 'a' in 'counta' stands for? Can't believe how many times in the last couple of months I've used/adapted the formulas already learned from this site - its like a whole new world opening up. Sorry! I seem to be gushing so I'll just shut up - but thanks again!!!

Also a good quick way to do this without having to use formulas is,
Right click the box 4th from the right at the bottom right hand side of the screen and set it to 'count' or 'count nums' then every time you highlight some cells it tells you.

Doreen - see your original question at the end of your other thread - I already answered that there - the "A" stands for "All"
ie CountAll instead of countNums Rgds

Hi FAM

This works fine for quick calcs that I don't need to save the result of - and is something I hadn't discovered for myself - it will be usefull in future, I'm sure. However, am I missing something? it seems to work wherever you hit 'right click' on that bottom line - not just on the fourth box?

Hi Geoff

Many thanks

Geoff
A thousand apologies!!! When you refered me back to my 'original question' - I thought you meant at the top of this thread. As you may note from my last 'thread' I have posted two answers which are virtually identical - except that one has a PS on it. When I sent the first in with the PS on the system crashed - when I logged back on the first message didn't show up so I put a second one on instead - and decided it would be simplier to start a new thread with the PS question. Unfortunately therefore have only just seen your very prompt and explicit reply. Have now printed and filed both sets of threads for future ref. Many thanks and apologies again for not noticing your first reply and asking you for the same information twice!!
