Evetn Viewer for 1708

This morning when I came in the office and look at Event Viewer ID 1708 for my Exchange Server 2000. I got somehting like this:

SMTP Authentication was performed successfully with client "johnmpxqv8z2gn". The authentication method was "NTLM" and the username was "Gigzy\johnt".

Yes, I do have johnt account in my Users. However, The authentication method was "NTLM". What is NTLM?
