event viewer problems!!!

when i try to open up event viewer i get the following

unable to complete the operation on "Application". the interface is unknown.

i get it with security and all other event logs too. is there anything i can do to fix this? i have been all over microsoft's website and find nothing

Stop the service "Event log" .
Do a search for *.evt files .
Appevent.evt should be found under c:\winnt\system32\config
Copy it to another location e.g desktop .
And delete the one in the c:\winnt\system32\config\..
Restart the "Event log" service and see if the recreated
application log works .
