Recently we installed a new backup server and had problems with it. I contacted Veritas support, followed their instructions and now I'm getting an event id 9 error: The device, \device\scsi\adpu10m2, did not respond within the time out period. Here are the steps that they had me perform:

1. Stop the following services (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services), then re-apply the MDAC Update:

--Backup Exec

--Terminal Services

--Trend Server Protect

2. Launch Windows Explore on the media server. Browse to the Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT Folder. Double click on the file Tapeinst.exe. Select to un-install and remove all Veritas Drivers. If there is an entry that shows "delete entries for tape device that are no longer available, select this also. Click next, finish wizard, and reboot.

3. On boot-up, select the CTRL A Setup Utility for the Adaptec Controller.

4. Select SCSI Disk Utilities. Let the scan run to determine/confirm which Target IDs the autoloader/tape drive(s) is/are on.

5. Hit the Escape Key and then select Configure/View Host Adapter Settings.

6. Under Additional Options, select SCSI Device Configuration.

7. Under the Target ID Numbers that the autoloader/tape drives are on, make sure Enable Disconnect is set to NO, then lower the Maximum Sync Transfer Rate (MB/Sec) to 20. Hit the Escape Key, save changes, and reboot the server.

8. Download and update to the latest Veritas Device Drivers. Select to update drivers for both the Robotic Library and Tape Drives (use Veritas Drivers for all devices). Update the drivers on the Adaptec SCSI Controller and Network Card(s) also.
I'm at my wits end on my backups. Some run successfully, some crash. Anyone run into this problem. thanks!

Hi,
This looks like u need some updated scsi drivers for ur hardware.

I thought I did that, however, I'm having someone else double check me.

U may also need to update ur BIOS or chipset drivers to provide SCSI support.

that I have not done. I will get one of the admins that is on location of the server and have him check it for me. thanks!

There are many different reasons for this error, however almost all are firmware or driver related.
If u keep this in mind and install all the most recent firmware u should hopefully get the issue nailed down.
