Hi,

Software: Win2k Server SP3, Backup Exec 8.6
Our brand new Dell PowerEdge2600 has been crashing recently (once every 2 weeks). I notice that it crashes during a backup using Backup Exec v8.6. The backup device we use is a SCSI internal LTO drive. This drive is on a different channel to the hot swap HDDs, which are on a RAID channel.

When I look at the event logs after a crash, Event 9, with source mraid2k stands out. After reading the MS website, it seems that the problem is hardware related particularly with respect to the SCSI setup. I contacted Dell and they replaced the motherboard, SCSI cable and LTO drive, but again the server crashed with the same error.

I contacted Dell again and they said to reinstall the entire OS and software. They reckon it can`t be hardware related as we already changed to a new motherboard etc.

Is it possible that BackupExec is causing the error? Event 9 refers to a timeout problem and MS recommends to increase the timeout time for the drive in question. How do I increase the timeout for the SCSI LTO drive in Win2k Server?

If there is a corrupt sector in one of the hard disks, could this cause a crash?

Sorry for the long post. I`m not experienced with server hardware and this server was the first one I worked on by myself.....

Any info much appreciated,
Danny

this is only my opinion but anything is better than backup exec... I refuse to use backup exec anymore on new server installs.
I ran into a problem similar to yours on a dell poweredge running 2k server on my last attempt at installing backup exec. Took out the software completely and installed "Yosimite tapeware" and haven't had a problem since. Easy software to set up and use.

See if you can borrow a copy of a tape backup software from someone to try. disable all the backup exec services before you install and try it. If another software works and you like it, buy it :)

Good luck

Thanks for the tip karmic.

It looks increasingly likely that Backup Exec is causing the problems. I`ll try to patch up BackUp Exec. Dell is going to replace the CPU and memory, so I hope there will be no more problems after this.

With BackUp Exec being such a popular product with a well established name, I wonder why I haven`t heard of more stories about Backup Exec causing re-boots and crashes....
