Hi guys,

I've always found wireless a little flakey an was contemplating purchasing powerline adapters (ethernet over power).

My question is, has anyone here used them? If so, were they any good? Did you get anywhere near the supported speed?

I don't particularly want to spend good $$$ on a 108Mbps power line adapter to find it a waste of time.

Thanks,
Adam

Never used them - just one of my customers have. They were very satisfied - but no quantifiables - just it works well for them.

But then wireless works well for most of my customers - though one or two have issues (usually down to construction of house - its not always obvious what wireless will and won't go through).

I've used them multiple times with good results when wireless was flaky. More expensive but worth it if you have the right situation.

Cool will look into it.

I find my wireless frequently drops out when I use my microwave. I've tried changing the wireless channel, but it doesn't really seem to help.

I've used them and they're good for fixed items. You probably won't get near the quoted speed - my 14Mbps ones managed about 5Mbps - but they are stable.

Of course you don't have the convenience of being able to move the attached kit around quite as easily as with wireless. If you do get some, don't forget that you still have to enable security.

I have read numerous reviews that state the powerline network systems have matured and are stable, fast alternatives to wireless. One review stated that it was sufficient for streaming video, but I have no personal experience yet. I see it as an excellent option to wireless.

Funny.... I had heard that if you have one unit on one "Leg" of your box, and the other on another leg, that it won't work. (Keeping in mind, this information may be incorrect or outdated)

Something about plugging my ethernet cord into an AC outlet scares me... I'll pull cat5. ;)

I'm using a RJ11 adapter over AC Outlet to get my phone line to my Tivo and it works great. I'm thinking of getting the RJ45 one to use my network connection instead on Dialup.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

As I understand it, these devices won't work on 3-phase mains supplies. Also, the electricity meters (at least in the U.K.) act as a barrier to onward passage to the rest of the street! Many of my users have them and are very satisfied.

AP81,
You could try to improve your wireless connection by getting another access point and setting it in between your wireless router and your computer. You can arrange it in such a way that it channels your wireless connection along a different path "around" your microwave.

Just a thought...
