Hello, hoping you can shed some light. I have a 2511 router whose E0 interface will not stay up. I have reset the config, given the interface an IP address and input the "no shutdown" command. However when I exit out of configuarion status and do a "copy run start", upon doing a "sho run" the interface does not show as being up, it gives a "line protocol down" message. Any suggestions as to keeping the line up? Thanks.

Are you physically connecting your Ethernet interface to a switch/hub/router or anything?

If not the interface will be down. Connect it to a hub with a straight cable and see what happens

If you aren't connecting a hub or switch (or PC on a cross-over cable) but you want the interface to stay up you can disable keepalives on the interface. Bear in mind that you should only really disable keepalives in a test environment as normally you would like to know when an interface physically goes down....

interface Ethernet0
no keepalive

Thanks Mark and Andy! I disabled the keepalives, also plugged in the workstation directly. The interface worked fine so I re-enabled the keepalives to continue testing the interface. The interface works fine. Seems the hub is faulty (back to the 1900 switch). Good point about the keepalives (this is an 8 router test lab). Thanks again to both of you.
