Hi guys. I have just installed Windows 98SE on a p233 on a MS5184 MB. The Ethernet card is a ALN-201C, although the card itself is not the problem. I think it is the board. The issue is this.

Ethernet card will not ping any addresses on the subnet except it's own IP. It can ping the internal loopback IP and the assigned IP, but nothing else.

Also, Windows seems to be detecting a dial up adapter that is not installed, as well as detecting another ethernet card that I triedm, but is no longer in the machine. It keeps trying to install that one.

Any ideas?

I've seen the phantom Dialup adapter, and it should be no problem.

You said "Ethernet card will not ping any addresses on the subnet except it's own IP. It can ping the internal loopback IP and the assigned IP, but nothing else."
This means the NIC itself is in good condition.

Here are some things to check.

1. Link Lights. Check the link lights on the PC's nic and it's corresponding HUB/SWITCH port. If the light isn't blinking on the HUB/SWITCH or NIC, try the cable on a PC AND hub port - and yes, hub ports do go bad - you know works. If the problem follows over to that PC, you'll know it's a bad cable. If the problem doesn't follow to the next PC, I'll be willing to guess that the HUB/SWITCH port is dead.

thanks for the help, I have resolved the issue. Bad driver install. Windows 98 showed a complete driver install, but it had skipped the .sys file, messing up the install.
