Ethernet activation

Just reinstalled Vista Ultimate. Can't connect to router because the ethernet plug doesn't seem to be turned on. How can I activate it since I can't get online?

WIN Vista Ultimate 32.
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Dual PCIe.
AMD Athlon 64X2 6000 Dual Core 3.7
Kingwin Mach 1 600watt MA1S.
OCZ Platinum XTC 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (4x1024MB).
XFX GeForce 8800GTS 320Mb XXX DDR3 PCI Express w/Dual DVI & HDTV Out (Retail).
NEC 22" MultiSync FE2111(SB)(Dual Monitors).
Maxtor 2HD = 1Terabyte

Says everything is working properly.

This was the last step thru the Trendnet tech online. She told me to push the reset button which didn't help. My two HP Pro machines, one wireless, still worked fine but not the Vista Ultimate machine. I swapped cables around and discovered that my ethernet connect at the computer wasn't activated.

How many network cards show in device manager? Ths specs for the board show two network cards on the board, it is possible only one card was installed when you loaded the drivers and the one you havwe the ethernet cable in is the one missing the drivers.

Ths cd that came with the board should have the nforce drivers that will install the other network card.

Shows 2 1394 net adapters and my Marvell Yukon Gigabit adapter and my nVidia nForce Net controller

I have tried it in both #1 and #2. Neither register.

OOPS! wrong device mgr. My Bad. the right one says: NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller #1 and #2.I had to switgh start menu to Classic to get RUN window. It doesn't allow me to type anything in it.

Try start and in the start search box type CMD then look up the column and CMD should be there click it and in the command prompt do an IPCONFIG /ALL

If both show media state disconnected i would almost try removing both cards in device manager and restart and let windows reload them.

You seem to be battling multiple faults on this machine, is that correct?

Have you tried using System Restore to get back to when everything worked? After you re-installed Vista was there a problem with entering text into Search boxes, or is the fault even more recent? Why did you have to re-install Vista, you don't say?

Have you installed all the necessary drivers from any motherboard manufacturer's supplied CD (if you have one that is), and have you been able to do your Windows Updates?

Got Network issues and nForce Chipset...

Have you tried "Safe Mode With Networking" or Normal Mode but as a different user?

Activation can be done over the phone with Microsoft via the usual Support numbers. I don't know if it is worth any activation until you sort out your current problems.

Tried system restore but no dates would take. Rebooting Vista was only choice. Can't recall specifics(disabled vet on meds, no short term memory).lol. Installed drivers that would take from two disks. No fix there. As for updates and fixes, I can't get online.

I had a similar problem where my Dell XPS 630i would not connect to my broadband and it turned out to be related to the version of the NVidia network card driver that came as standard with the Dell XPS build. I resolved this in two stages:

1) I had to force the NVidia network card to "Auto Negotiate to 100Mb Full Duplex" to get it connected to the network. Forcing it to anything else still left it as Media Disconnected

2) I could then download the latest NVidia drivers which work at normal Auto Negotiate

You could try that, it might work.

I have run this setup for over a year with no problem. I'ts this new boot of Vista that is the culpret here. Also, I used Network Magic to set up but then dumped them later. I'm thinking maybe I should give that a try since it comes free with the new boot. If that doesn't work I'll go thru the suggestions I've received here. Thanks for all the advice. Been fun.
