Escaping Characters

Guys any help would be appreciated here.

What I am trying to do is use php to write a small javascipt validation function into a dyanmic page but I'm not sure how to escape the semi-colon ( can I use a back slash (/ or do I use octal code (/XXX)? If it's octal code anybody know either what it is or a decent reference site to find it myself?%-)

If the semicolon appears inside the quotes of a literal string:

print 'foo;';

or

print "bar;";

PHP will just print the semicolon.
