What can one do to prevent those errors on drives (C,D,E,etc)? They can be fixed with scandisk but it is very annoying. They always come back from day to day.

Errors on a drive are what Scandisk detects and corrects after a computer freezes, crashes. Most often, my PC freezes when trying to connect to my Internet server via ordinairy phone line or when booting. I have W98.

Either the drive is going bad, or a bad data cable. Change the cable. If it doesn't fix the problem, look for a new drive. Either way, back up anything important immediately! You don't "fix" bad blocks.

Try the manufacturer's diagnostics to show any serious problems.
Try a longer or shorter cable. The lack of termination creates electrical noise on the wires and that can affect the drive operation. Or you could try the 80 wire version of IDE cable.
And you can have memory problems that will mimic drive errors.

Also;
If you Reformatted, and Forgot to do a thorough Scandisk test on the Newer Drive Letters (D, E, F) BEFORE writing data to them......there's your prob. possibly. If the drive is older, it could be bad for good.

The drive (and computer) are 5 years old. They could start being tired now. I think it would be smarter to invest money on a new system. Anyway, I was curious to know if those errors were generated by hardware or Windows.

Thanks for help

Agreed that spending major money can be a waste. But if the computer does what it needs to do, some tweaking and corrections can resolve the problems for less than replacement cost.

You probably need to run scandisk under DOS a couple of times after a crash to determine whether it is hardware related. Off the emergency boot disk would be fine.

Reloading windows "over the top" sometimes rewrites stuff in such a way that the crashes are reduced. On occasion I've been forced to make multiple reloads to resolve intermittent stuff. Somewhat like reinstall fixing 90% of the problems each time. It can be a pain.
