quite often, SCANDISK detects errors and corrects them. nothing has appeared during normal running (mainly internet)
where do these errs come from ? i've had the same thing on several pcs. could an application be interacting incorrectly with windows ? testing the hd with a spcialist diagnostic does not produce errs.

Is the PC shut down properly? (ie start -> shutdown and then switched off at the "It is now safe to turn your computer off" or the ATX automatic power down).
This is a good sign of problems and cause of scandisk running at startup.

Had the same problem, ran a thorough surface scan, which takes forever, but solved the problem, no more errors or scandisk running at startup.

scandisk doesnt run at start up.will try surface scan thanks

As mentioned in a previous post the errors usually come from Windows not being shut down properly, but can also come from any other program not closing smoothly and tidying up after itself.

If you run the surface scan and find bad sectors then you have discovered a third possible reason. If you have more than one bad sector then it is usually an inevitable path to more from there and hard drive replacement is required.

ran surface scan--no errs or bad sectors but up to now have not had any more errs, of course you dont know if an app is shutting everything down correctly
