I get the following error when starting the tape enging in ArcServe from Services:

"Could not start the brightstor ab tape engine service on local computer. Error 183: Cannot create a file when that file already exists."

The library in question is one of 2 connected to a central server.

I have rebooted the server and both tape librarys. I can see and use the 2second 25 tape library normally, the other I cant. The one I cant use acts like there is still a tape in it. It is also still "locked, media in use".

There is no media in the drive which I verified visually.

Here is the event log in the Applications Log.

"The description for Even ID (0) in Source (AST apesrv) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: AST apesrv error: 183, Tape Engine already running."

Even though the log says the engine is already running, its not.

If anybody knows anything about this please help. Thanks

Probably the process is hung.

In the task manager - check whether you have an instance of tapeeng.exe running and then kill it using the kill utility and then try starting the tape engine service.
