Occasionally when I click on a database to start dBase and use the database I get this:
Compiling line 1
(shows some high asci chrs like spades or faces; they are apt to be different next time used)
Error on line 1: *** Unrecognized command verb

Error on line 6: Line exceeds maximum of 1024 characters
The "cancel" box pops up and if you hit enter, the database runs perfectly.
(Dbase IV for dos in Win95 dosbox)
***
Why is it compiling an old database?
No line in the database exceeds 1024 characters

Hi

1. The ascii characters you refer to are just probably related to the codepage that was used on initial setting up. If the code-page hasn't been set up correctly, certin display characters will look strange. All you are probably missing on screen are lines or a box etc.

2. Without knowing what the command lines 1 and 6 are, its difficult to answer. Can you MODIFY COMMAND progname so you can view these command lines?

3. It may be compiling the program because the .dbo fiel is not there. Maybe there is another program that deletes these files for saving space.

Thanks for writing.
There is no program involved. Just a database with only 748 characters in all 9 fields combined.

Hi

I'm a bit confused here. You say that there is no program involved , yet the error lines you are reporting seem to suggest that it is a program.

What is the name and extension of the icon you are clicking?
