I have a problem when I'm deleting files within Explorer. If I delete one file, it is deleted but does not go into the recycle bin. If I try to delete multiple files, I get the following error message.

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:00000001.

One file is deleted but does not go into the recycle bin.

Can anyone help as the error message means absolutely nothing to me.

Thanks for the suggestion,TekTippy4U, however, I checked and I do not have the WebHancer Agent installed. The problem is not with Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer (I preferred the old name, File Manager, as that is more appropriate to what I use it for).

Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

Are you online when trying to delete?......as I think even if your not online...It's because the files are in use......
and is there something you've noticed about the similarity of extensions you're having trouble deleting?

If I may ask without getting too personal....what are the ext's? of the files.....

I've noticed over the years...some files don't ever go to the recycle bin...can't remember what kinds though, right now......

I'll keep scratchin' my head......:>)

I am not online when I am trying to delete and it is also it is not file extension specific. If it is a file in use you always get an error message saying that it can't delete it.

Keep on scratching :)

If you reboot, are you then allowed to delete the file?

...Mac

Humpty Dumpty was pushed!!

Re: my last posting;
I say this because if you grab a bunch of files to delete at once and "anyone of them is in use"...it'll stop deleting as soon as it runs into that particular file.....

and who knows what Windows does if that happens as far as moving the first deletable over to the Recycle bin or not....

Do you have multiple partitions.....
Are your Bin settings appropriate (i.e. Configure each drive independently choice?)....also the "do not move files to recycle bin,Remove files immediately when deleted?)

The current settings for the recycle bin are:

Global

use one setting for all drives

I'll change the setting to:

Configure drives independently.

And I'll let you know if that solves the problem.

I've tried your suggestion.

I now have an interesting situation.

If I delete a file from my D drive, it appears in the recycle bin. However, if I delete the exact same file from my C drive, it doesn't.

I am really puzzled now.

When you "Configure drives independently".....make sure that C:\ is configured the same as D:\......under each corresponding tab......
I know it seems like a no-brainer...
Let us know

When you say...."The exact Same File"...could it be you are deleting the "Copy of It"
And then once done the File on C:\ is being used...probably as it was all along.....

Try reversing....delete C:\ first...then D:
(I don't know why you have 2.....unless maybe your D:\ partition isn't an extended dos partition(which really can't be, since you can only make one active..For 'Boot' Reasons)

The C & d bins are configured the same.

The reason for the same file was to eliminate a possibility if it was file specific. It was just a test I was doing. I copied one file from my c drive to my d drive and then deleted them both. Both file should have appeared in the recycle bin.

I've repeated it with another file, but deleting it first from the c drive it doesn't appear in the bin, but however from the d drive it does.

then try a tick in the checkbox saying "don't move to recycle bin before deleting".in C:\......try deleting again.........UNLESS it worked.........
uncheck and try again.........you got a spooky livin in there...
[evil]

I agree with you, TekTippy4U, I reckon I have a "spooky" living here. Maybe the explorer.exe is somehow corrupted. Do you know if it possible to uninstall & reinstall the program without having to do a complete reinstallation?

Sure.......Got the CD?...or are your setup files on your hard drive?....
I'd use CD first if possible...

If CD....navigate to(I guess E is your CD)
E:\win98\WIN98_41.CAB....right click explorer.exe....extract to...C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP
wait a second...and close window...

Now right click My Computer....choose explore...
In left pane...open C:\WINDOWS...
In right pane...right click explorer.exe
choose rename....
type explorer.old...hit enter

Now..don't go anywhere......
In left pane go to C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP
....make sure you can still see the WINDOWS folder in left pane
In right pane.....either drag and drop explorer.exe,...or right click drag and drop.....and you'll get choices to
*MOVE HERE
*MAKE COPY
*create shortcut here
*Cancel
Close all open windows.......Take out CD from drive...

Your Good to go..........reboot.....maybe find explorer.old......and try to delete that

If your using Win98 SE
Explorer.exe is in a near, but different CAB folder...
I think it's higher than 41.CAB....Check by looking

If you don't have CD.....your CAB folders are most likely in C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS.....OR C:\CABS

I APOLOGIZE....
I don't know what I was thinking...I'm a bit busy.....
I forgot..Doh!....
You might have to do this in MS-DOS mode.....
Hang on a few minutes......
I'm going to do this myself...

Your going to run into an error message when you try to rename.........because it's being used....aba duh.....:>)

In thinking of the easiest way to avoid the EXTRACT command, which is a pain in the A*%...if you don't get the syntax right

Ok here we go....

Get a copy of "explorer.exe" from your CAB folders to your desktop from either your CD (preferably) or Harddrive as outlined above....
right click it and rename "explore.old"
Go into Windows Explorer..or and drag and drop into the
C:\WINDOWS Folder
So now you have both explorer.exe(corrupt) AND
explorer.old(new)..in WINDOWS folder.

Restart in MS-Dos mode....HIT ENTER after each line........at prompt...type;
CD WINDOWS
del explorer.exe
ren explorer.old explorer.exe
Remove CD if it's in the drive
CTRL+ALT+DEL......to restart

You've just deleted the Corrupted explorer.exe...and renamed the new one

Your good to go now.......
Let me know how it went...
Peace

I've reinstalled Explorer as suggested. That worked fine but the problem is still there. Is the Recycle Bin operated by another program?

Do you have diff. OS's on each partition (Dual Boot)...?
Is there a listing for Recycle Bin in Each Drive in Evplorer view?
Try holding the shift key when deleting, as this will delete directly...no bin..
I know this isn't the eventual desired effect.....but I'm running out of options....and maybe it's a stuck key on the keyboard..
Check the BIOS for a Desktop Mananger Event Logging..as fer as stuck keys go...
I never looked into which/what controls Recycle Bin.....
It may even be a stuck rectory key in REG.....

I don't have dual OS systems and there is a listing in each drive but it shows the same files. It shows their original locations as being on the D drive.

There are no problems with the keyboard.

You could be right it may have something to do with the registry.

It looking more likely that I'll have to do a reinstallation of Windows.
