Error installing directx 8.0

When attempting directx install - error appears saying "This program is not designed for use on Windows NT".

I am running win2k with sp2. It doesnt appear to be a hardware conflict as it doesnt even get a chance to load. It would seem to me to be something in the registry it doesnt like. I have tried this with 3 separate versions of the directx installer.

Any ideas appreciated
