Last Friday we were having a problem with one of our machines. It would boot to the (win98) desktop but then lock up. The system would try to repair the registry when it was rebooted with no luck. Now when we try to boot the machine it give an error "error loading module KERNEL" and shuts off. When I boot writing to the bootlog.txt file I have the following errors:

Initializing KERNEL
Terminate = KERNEL
Terminate = Win32
EndTerminate = Win32
EndTerminate = Kernel

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Hello, Cassaro.

If you have dos-based virus scan, do a scan from dos prompt. If not, leave it out for a moment.

Then, extract a fresh copy of kernel32.dll from your installation package from command prompt:

::----batch--------
c:
cd c:\windows\command
extract /Y/A X:\win98\win98_22.cab /L C:\Windows\System Kernel32.dll
::----batch end----
Note: Edit the color red part to point to your .cab file location.

If the system can boot normal, do a virus scan.

Tsuji,

Unfortunatly that did not correct the situation. I do thank you for your input though.

I am still open to any suggestions that anyone may have on this issue.

Cassaro,

So you do place a clean copy of kernel32.dll replacing the existing one, do you not?

As the system is still stuck, run:
<path:>\scanreg /restore
at command prompt, as it happened only last Friday and never was able to boot normal. Select a date before the incident happened.
