When I start up my system before Win 98 starts it says in DOS that There is an error in your config.sys line 5. Is this anything major? Can I fix it? Thanks

Open up RUN. tyepe edit config.sys and hit enter.
Look down 5 lines, what does it say? More than likely you can put an REM in front of it. James Collins

How about posting the contents of you config.sys.
As James says, you can probably Rem it out, or put semicolon in front, but whatever has been put there may have something else with it that may also need to be removed.
Depending on how you got to your current OS version you may have several other items that are useless or potential trouble. Ed Fair

When I go to RUN the type edit config.sys there is nothing in my config.sys All lines are empty.

Go to Start>Run and type notepad c:\config.sys

Truthfully, I'd simply rename the file to config.sy_ and restart your machine. The autoexec.bat and config.sys are not required on a Win98 computer...unless you are running older DOS programs. Even then, these DOS commands can be inserted in the c:\windows\dosstart.bat and/or the Exit To Dos file in the c:\windows directory.

There is an inconsistency here.
How many config.*'s can you find? How big by byte count in the directory?
How do you know all lines are blank?
What happens when you choose to boot into DOS? What can you find in DOS for config and the line 5 that is giving trouble?

On line 5 of my config.sys it says DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\TAISATAP.SYS /D:CD1

What does this mean?

Look at your autoexec.bat and make the last part identical

As an example:
Here's a sample for autoexec.bat
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000
Here's a sample for Config.sys
Device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD000

You can use the generic oakcdrom.sys from the Win98 boot disk. Just copy it to c:\windows\command and you can use the above exactlty as it stands.

This section (/D:MSCD000) has to be identical.

This line is supposed to load the cdrom driver TAISATAP.SYS located in the \cdrom directory using an interface driver named CD1.
The error you are getting is due to some corruption of the line in all likelyhood.
I haven't checked to see what would happen (in 98) to see what would happen if himem.sys was missing in a previous line but that might be a possibility.
How about posting your full config.sys here. Ed Fair

In Win98, the hidden io.sys file handles all the autoexec.bat and config.sys functions automatically. It's the io.sys file that's giving you the error message because it parses the information in the config.sys if it exists. If you rename the c:\config.sys file to c:\config.sy_, you will not get an error message on startup. Simple as that.

The files are only there for backward-compatability with older 16-bit programs or DOS programs.

Hey ppl

What is the use in loading a device driver for dos if you are using the windows driver when the pc is booted into windows ??? There is no sense in it!! but I would like to hear the other side if there is one??

I'm working on it. I don't quite understand this computer jargon, but I'll get there in the end if you bear with me. Thanks for all the help in advance though!
