i get an error and premiere closes down.. i can import some avi files but not all... kinda makin me mad so if anyone could help with some ideas i would be forever in debt, thanks

What other applications on your machine can read these files? Do you have some form of "bonus"ware, such as VideoWave installed, perhaps? If so, can you open the file in any video editor other than Premiere?

umm i jsut tried opening it in windows media player 9 and it worked fine umm i dont have any bonus ware, not sure what that is and i dont have any other video editors although im thinking of switching to avid express nah i dunno man, whatcha thnkin could be the problem? thanks again edward!

Okay, if you can open and edit and export other AVI files, then it's very likely that Premiere isn't directly the problem.
You can see and read the files in other viewers, so that's promising.
"Bonusware" is what I also call "shovelware", which is what a computer manufacturer shovels onto your computer to increase its "value" without increasing its value.
Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing Premiere? It could be that you installed some new codec or something since you installed Premiere. Re-installing Premiere might help that.
