Error booting up a 95 machine

I set up an old machine (Compaq 166mhz, 48mb) by restoring it to the original settings, which included 95. I get the following error:

"Error
Invalid System Configuration Data - Run Configuration Utility
Warning: IRQ Not Configured - PCI Display Controller
Bus: 00, Device: 14, Function: 00

<F1> to Resume, <F10> to setup&quot;

I hit F1 and it loads Windows and runs fine. But how do I get rid of this? I hit F10 and looked around in there, but saw nothing that looked like it would solve the problem...

I cannot make too accurate of an guess as why you get this error. From your post, you did not mention where in the boot up process this error occurs. It sound like the BIOS is presenting you with the error. If this is the case, try to flash the BIOS. You can do this in several ways: You can hold End right before you turn on your computer and when it actually loads (key changes depending on BIOS), switch the BIOS jumper, or remove the battery. You can use DEBUG to flash the BIOS, but I do not remember all of the information. Beware, however, resetting the BIOS, on older machines, require you to know your system configuraiton well to put the settings back. If you do not know your system well, resetting the BIOS is not recommended. You do not need to worry about this on newer computers as the BIOS will try its best to detect the best BIOS settings. If you could give us more information, we may be able to help you better.

The error happens almost immediately. By the time the monitor comes into focus when I turn it on, it already has the error message displayed. Does that help?

Reboot your PC and hit f10 to go into BIOS, find a setting that says something like &quot;restore factory defaults&quot;. Select it, save and close.

Just a quick question...

Did you ever upgrade the video card in this PC since you've owned it? That might explain why the factory defaults under the Compaq restore disk aren't working.

It's a business PC. The only upgrade I am aware of is jumping the memory from 16 to 48. I will try to restore the factory defaults when I set it up again....It's going to a satellite office sometime this week, and is essentially boxed up ready for the trip...

I reset the factory defaults and I still get the same error message almost immediately after booting up. The PC used to have a network card, but is being taken to a remote office and will not need the network card. I yanked the network card and put the original modem back in. After I got the email account up and running the modem crapped out, so I ordered another and installed it. The email and internet connection works fine.

The BIOS is telling you that the BIOS settings do not match the current hardware configuration. Check the settings to confirm that they all match the hardware. In this case the configuration problems in question regard the video card. If I am guessing corrrectly from the BIOS report the card is trying to initialize itself on IRQ 14, which is the IRQ for the IDE interface. When you continue the PnP system of Windows reconfigures the video card up to a valid, non sharing IRQ (look in the Device Manager for confirmation).

If this is the case

(1) the BIOS may have a setting to move the interrupt for the video card to another one. It may be automatic or most likely manual via the PCI setup to change which IRQ is assigned to what slot during the bootup process.

(2) try moving the video card to another slot, as most BIOS's hard wire a particular IRQ to a physical PCI slot.

It is an IRQ conflict and something has to be moved. Your mileage may vary...
