I am trying to fix a SBS 2003 server. It shut down today. There were two SBCore - Event 1011 and 1012 warnings indicating mutiple DC's and server would shut down in 60 minutes and then 30 minutes - Then a SBCore 1001 that server was shut down because of non-compliance with EULA.

Anyway I think the shutdown problem is related to DNS event 4004 and 4015. There are hundred's of these in the log and I have noticed them for the last several weeks. The server has been running fine until today's shutdown. There is a reverse lookup zone with a red X 68.168.192.in-addr.arpa. Our subnet is 192.168.1.0 with mask of 255.255.255.0. I don't know where this reverse lookup came from. And I cannot delete it. I get a message saying that AD is not running so unable to delete.

I have one DC (SBS2003) and 5 clients (XP/2000).

Can I unintall DNS and reinstall? Or will that mess up AD?

There are two NIC's in Server - only one is used.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Those errors usually mean it detected another domain controller for your domain. SBS doesn't like that. If it detects another SBS box with the same domain name, or another server attempting to be a domain controller (with the PDCe role) for the same domain name, it will give those errors and shut down. That's by design, and not likely a DNS issue.

If you've got AD errors, pull the network cable on the box and reboot. Then see if you can kill the reverse zone.

I will try that this morning.

Another thought is that the original install was in 192.168.68.0 subnet and then changed to 192.168.1.0.

Thanks.
