I'm getting the following error on my backup jobs. The device is not off-line and the file exists.

[Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)] Error 3201: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open backup device '\\Datasafe\SQLDatabases\PacioliDBbackups\master_db_200605210100.BAK'. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

A bit of history -- we replaced one Raid 5 disc array with a newer, larger one. MSDB, Master, TEMPDB and Model were all on the array that was not replaced. Only user databases were on the replaced array. I detatched, moved, moved back and reattached the smaller of those and did a full restore on the larger user database. Everything checks out normally and all dbs are performing properly.

This error cropped up when I was trying to restore the user databases, so I just copied the backups to a local disc and went from there.

These backup jobs worked fine before the change. Since I didn't have to affect the system databases, I did not have to recreate any jobs -- these are all as before.

This is a SQL 2000 system running on Windows 2000.

Thanks for your input.

Found something on the Microsoft site regarding this -- it said to right click on the database maintenance plans and choose maintenance history to get a more detailed response to the error. This revealed the message to look in the error log.

The error log which told me that we had too many logins for the backup server. We rebooted the server and the problem is solved.

Thanks!

if this continues, check your audit log.....it might be set for 'crash on autid//

If you are able to do so, you should delete the backup file and try again, if you are trying to overwrite an exiting file.

Thanks. I think it was just because we took the one server down to put in the new drives and it didn't clear off the login on the other server for whatever reason.
