Error 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

Invalid Startup directory, please check you pif file.<br>

I checked this and the path is ok. I read a little and from what I gather I have to reload the ntio.sys file. Does anyone know if I have to do this or not. Does this file come from the SP5 or can I use the one I have on my CD for the install.

How did you determine that your problem is the NTIO.SYS file?<br>I'm not very clear on exactly what is the original problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;Do you have a problem running a specific 16bit app or can you not run command.com or from the Start&gt;Run box?&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Command&quot; is the 16bit command shell and &quot;cmd&quot; is the 32bit command shell. <br>If it helps at all, I am running NT4, SP3 and NTIO.SYS is 33792 bytes, created 31Dec79 and modified date 30Apr97.<br>If I delete NTIO.SYS from my system, then I cannot run command.com and I get a error dialog box titled &quot;16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem&quot; and it contains the message &quot;An installation file required by NTVDM is missing, execution must terminate.&nbsp;&nbsp;C:\WINNT\System32\ntio.sys&quot;&nbsp;&nbsp;If I replace NTIO.SYS with a crap file, then the command window opens but it appears hung without a cursor.&nbsp;&nbsp;I then have to exit the task to get rid of the window.<br>Hope this helps. <p>Ian Cowie<br><a href=mailto:ianco@email.com>ianco@email.com</a><br><a href= > </a><br>"If you see something THIS big, with eight legs, coming your way, let me know. i have been having problems with a 16-bit program...i've found a lot of things that helped...and a lot of things that didn't...here is the low-down.<br><br>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;first of all...make sure you have the most recent NT version on your NT workstation...should be 6a.<br>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;second of all...go to a command prompt and type<br>SET COMSPEC <br>and hit enter.&nbsp;&nbsp;make sure the line that shows up after it reads the following:<br>ComSpec=C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe<br><br>now if the program is executable from the command prompt, go to start-&gt;run (and as long as your results from above ended in cmd.exe) type CMD and hit enter and then CD to the path of your program and run it by typing it's name.<br><br>also...here are some more ideas<br>-------------------------------<br><br>* what is the extension of your file?&nbsp;&nbsp;if it's the only one of it's kind on your PC, try the MS Article ID - Q156360<br>* use the /separate command when starting the program<br>* add the following two lines to the bottom of your win.ini file<br>[PROGRAMS]<br>TBLOAD.EXE=&quot;c:\folder\subfolder\program.exe&quot;<br><br>(replacing the path after TBLOAD.EXE= with your path to the 16-bit program -of course!!!)<br><br>good luck<br><br><A HREF="mailto:blanca488@hotmail.com">blanca488@hotmail.com</A>
