Hi, I tried installing some software and got this error: error 1406 Could not write value to Key:
software/microsoft/windows/currentversion.

I am the administrator so I checked below and I am not in the admin group! What can I do to correct this?

# Select Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.
# In the Computer Management dialog, click on System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users.
# Right-click on your user name and select Properties.
# In the properties dialog, select the Member Of tab and make sure it states "Administrator".

Also when I right click on admin, and click member of, I get an error the workstation service has not been started, but this is not listed in services although I think there should be a workstation service?

You haven't mentioned what software you're trying to install, so see if any of these apply.

You have no Workstation service? This could be related to the problem, because many other services depend on Workstation service. Have a look at the processes tab of Task Manager. Sort by name & look at what's listed for svchost.exe. Do you have svchost.exe processes for the user 'network service', local service, & system? What happnes if you run this from the command prompt: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Lastly, it would be nice if the error pointed out which registry hive it was trying to write to, but anyway.... It's possible that your software is trying to install something older than what's already there. It's also possible that is a permission issue. Each registry key has permission settings as well. Unforunately, the key software/microsoft/windows/currentversion exists in each of the hives - CLASSES_ROOT, CURRENT_USER, LOCAL_MACHINE, & CURRENT_CONFIG. Each could have it's own permissions, but I'd delve deeper into the services problem before persueing individual permissions.

Try adding/making yourself a member of the AdministratorSSSSSSSSSSSS group, the S is emphasized deliberately.

How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults

Have a look at the SubInAcl process.

ok, I have 4 svchost.exe listed in taskmanager but not sure what they are all for!

I don't have Norton or Mcafee!

I was trying to install Microsoft anti spyware to just run it for it protection, I don't like windows defender as there is no flexibility in configuring the programme. I have spysweeper nut it freezes a lot!

I have tried to make my self Administrator but I simply get a error as soon as I click member of!

Running this ( C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs)from a cmd prompt gives me docs and settings!

Ok, I tried linney's workstation service is missing thread and tried the network clien and get an error " Access is denied".

So, I hvae jsut did linney's other suggestion
How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults and now i guess I'll need to psot this as I'll have to reboot!

I'll post with a follow up to see if I cna fix this now after a reboot!

Cheers guys, got it sorted, I had to reinstall the server service as well and then was able to add myself to admin, rebooted and installed MSAS and now it loads on boot up.

Here's a few stars for you two!

I think this started last week when I installed something that made my computer go a bit haywire, boot ups became very slow and long and my second hard drive disappeard. I did a repair of the boot.ini using the repair installation boot/cfg to repair it and this got back the hard drive and fixed the XP boot up !
