Err Msg: Windows 2000 Count Not Start...... Please Help

I recently built a new computer here are the specs. (ABIT KT7A-Raid MOBO, 1.0 Gig T-Bird, 512meg PC-133, All-In-Wonder Radeon, 1 maxtor 20 gig ata100, 1 maxtor 40 gig ata 100, and 1 maxtor 15 gig ata66, 3com nic, sblive.... Phew! anyway my problem is I did a fresh install of win2k and installed all my drivers, now everything works great. until I update my all in wonder software to the latest release, it installation go's ok no problem and I can reboot back into windows no problem, I can do that 100 times it will work fine, but once I shut off my computer (I mean power it down)and then turn it back on I get this following message

Windows 2000 Could Not Start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\winnt\system32\config\system

Now I tried the ememrgency repair and that didn't work, and I said to myself oh well I have time I will reformat, so I did everything all over again and the same thing happened, 3 times now, I have tried a different 2000 cd, now this problem might not be related to the ati software, but it seems to wierd.

p.s. I also installed everything 1 by 1 and shutdown, the the error occurred with the ati software so that is how I am guessing it is the ati software.... PLEASE HELP!

It is possible.. The System subkey of the KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive in the registry is too large to fit into the allocated memory space. Often, this part of the registry is too large because services store a lot of information in their parameters keys under the CurrentControlSet\Services key. The following services are known to store large amounts of data under this key under certain conditions:

- Spooler (number of printers)
- DHCP (number of reservations)
- AT Scheduler (number of jobs)
- DFS (number of shares)
- Other and third-party services

I figure that you would be part of the latter. This usually happens only with NT4.0 but 2000 isn't such a strech.

The only resolution for above is to use an Emergency Repair Disk (which didn't work for you), or perform a reinstallation of Windows NT. After you have recovered the system from a backup or an ERD, you can either reduce the amount of data stored by the service or install the hotfix for the problem service. Figure you are right about the ATI software.

Hi, I have the same problem. ERD Does not fix but run it anyway. Go back into Recovery console and go to \winnt\system32\config. rename system file, copy \winnt\repair\regback\system to \winnt\system32\config. this will get you running again with out a reinstall. Try turning off disk caching. Mine still does it most every day, and microsoft can't figure it out either. let me know if anybody else figured it out... zed

Dont upgrade the ATI then.
If you have an anti-virus running while you are doing the upgrade shut it off while doing the install.This helped me when I upgraded the ATI. It was buggy the first time I did the upgrade. Reformatted and shut of norton while doing the upgrade and had no problem the second time.
The ATI upgrade from MS doesent seem to do anything other than put an icon in the taskbar anyway.
