My customer is using Mozilla Thunderbird as his email client and cannot retrieve emails when the AVG 7 Email Scanner is enabled.

When I tried to telnet to the mail server I received the error:

"-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!"

The customer also had Sygate Firewall running, I shut this down to rule it out and found the cause to be AVG. If I disable Email Scanning in AVG the messages are downloaded fine.

The solution in the following thread points to Zone Alarm as being the problem, however in this instance the firewall is Sygate and has been shut down:

At the moment I have disabled the AVG Email Scanner for the customer.

AVG is setup with all default settings.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

The zonealarm issue is not that zonealarm is a problem, just that you need to add permissions for it to work in conjunction with AVG email scanning.

Is there nowhere similar in sygate to add these settings? All you do in zonealarm is add the pop settings as an allowed 'zone', call it email or similar and the prob goes away.

I thought I ruled out Sygate by shutting it down but I guess it could still somehow be the problem.

I'm sure there's a way to 'allow' the pop settings in sygate.

I'll look into this and post back ...
