EOM handling error: Stek L40 library/HPUX (status 40)

Recently deployed an STEK L40 library with 2 LTO drives on hpux 11.0 (L3000)
Problem I'm having is that when a backup reaches the end-of-media, it exists with status 40 and will not use a new tape until current one is frozen. Somehow it ain't handling EOM dcorrectly. have had a case open with Vrts but starting to hit a wall.
All backups, tape handling and robtest interaction works fine. Only EOM handling is an issue.
Robotic arm is using sctl passthru device (although no difference in behaviour from previously defined /dev/rac/cXtXdX config; drives are BESTnb

Anyone seen this on a similar setup ?

many moons ago i had probs with backups failing to span tapes. i can't find any info in my old emails, but i would first check the /kernel/drv/st.conf - dunno what the HP equivalent is (this is from Solaris). Having correct drive mapping in st.conf is what fixed the problem for me anyway,
