I have SQL Server 2000 installed on my PC. It is working great. in enterprise manager I have 3 sql servers registered ( one local and 2 remote). I have some local packages that I use to sync up the databases. I want other PCs on the network to be able to run the packages.

I installed enterprise manager on one of the other PCs. the problem is that I can't get it to find the server on my machine. I tried both a network address (CUBE4/databaseNameHere), and I tried the IP address. neither of them would let me connect. It keeps giving me an error when I try to start the service ("Datasource name not found and no default driver specified.") The funny thing is that I can connect fine using a .udl file, so I know that it's there. How do I get it to work? Also, if there's an easier way for them to be able to execute the packages, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

What type of authentication is SQL Server using?

When you try to set up the connection from the remote computer, what login are you using (yours or someone else's)? If someone else's, do they have a login on the SQL Server they are trying to register?

I'm using an "sa" login and password. I tried the same uname/pword that I use to log in.

OK, first the lecture. Never use or let anyone else use the sa login and password. If anyone else knows it, change it immediately. (Not really a big problem on a local database that is used for development, but it is best to get into good habits.)

Do you by chance have XP with service pack 2 installed? YOu probably have a firewall issue.

Questions about posting. See faq183-874

Changed the password. I turned off the Windows Firewall on both computers and it still doesn't want to connect. However... I found a way to execute the packages through VB.net so I just included it into the software I wrote for the office. This will be a less error prone approach anyway. Thank you for responding.

Merry X-mas!
