I am convinced that this question is so simple it will be very embarrassing. But ask it I will.

How or what does one order to get a licensed copy of MS SQL Enterprise Manager. I have access to a Server running MS SQL 2000.

I am starting out just learning MS SQL, but clearly one must have a copy of Enterprise Manager installed to access, and work with an instance of MS SQL.

I have checked Microsoft.com, have looked on Computershopper.com and via Google and although I can find information on MS SQL Enterprise and its license costs, I have not been able to determine what is needed.

I am "guessing" it is a CAL for the MS SQL Server and User CAL but when I have looked at the details, there is no mention of Enterprise Manager.

Would someone be able to shed light on this issue?

Thanks in advance...

EM is only a tool to manage SQL srvers and its free. There is no license. If you install SQL Server Service to host DB's then only license come to play. There are other tird party tools provide same or better features to manage SQL server. Check out Quest products, SQL Navigator etc.
Good Luck

Good Luck.

Dr.Sql,

Thanks for the quick reply.

So if I understand you correctly, I should be able to freely use a copy Enterprise Manager. However, would I need a Server plus user CALs. Requires a license for the computer running the Microsoft server product, as well as a CAL for each user? See -
As I read it I would need a CAL to access the server based SQL. $150 is understandable..

Would appreciate your comments.

Correct, you need a CAL to connect to the SQL Server just like you would with any other client. Enterprise Manager comes on the SQL Server cd (just run though the install from the server disk and install just the client tools).

You can not order just the Enterprise Manager. It is not sold seperatly.
