How do you encrypt a column inside a table using sybase. This does not apply to passwords, this applies for example account numbers, telephone numbers. The problem is if someone gets into the database and you have a stored proc or trigger doing the encryption then they can usual pick up the key from there.

Thanks in advance.

Aggie,

I believe your problem is that the procedure or trigger code is visible to the user, and hence he/she should be able to arrive at the encrypted password given the plain text password, and the trigger text.

Sybase has provided a new procedure called sp_hidetext.

This procedure will hide the text of the procedure ( name to be passed as argument). Don't ask me what this guy does to hide the text, as the code of the 'sp_hidetext' procedure also has been hidden.

I know that this post is very old and i believe you already have the answer to the question. If that answer is different from my suggestion, please let me know too.

Cheers,
