i am a newbie at this cisco thing and i am having problems enabling a port on my switch
all the ports are in vlan 1 which is default i think ..but when i go into inferface mode and enable a particular port with the no shutdown command it tels me that its up then on the second line it says its down...
what am i doing wrong???

Does it say administratively down or just down.

It will go up and down dynamically based upon link status. "Administratively" down means means it was shutdown manually or by a security violation.

If you do a "no shut" and it comes up, then a moment later you see something like "line protocol down"; that's usually an indication that you turned the port on, but nothing's linked up to it yet.

this is the message i get...

02:52:21: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEthernet0/48, changed state to up
02:52:21: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEthernet0/48, changed state to down

yeah, that usually means it has no link. Don't know if you have anything plugged into it yet or not, but it looks like it's not seeing a link. However, you did turn it on properly otherwise it would say "changed state to administratively down.

yeah..i connected to my hub using a crossover cable and i there aren't any connection led showing on the switch ....
i have left the mode staus on the switch to stat which i think is right but still no joy..

Are you hooking it up to a true HUB? If so you shouldn't need a cross over, just a straight through cable will work. If it is a Switch you are hooking it up to use the crossover cable.
