Enabling Menu Item Shortcut Key

I have applied shortcut keys to my menu items but they don't seem to work. In the properties I have set text = &Help and shortcutkeys=Alt+H. I provide a trap that is triggered when I press Alt+H but when I remove the trap and press Alt+H the drop down items are not displayed, as they are when I click 'Help'. Anyone know what I'm missing here?
