I've got one mailbox that, when logged into, shows an unread message in the Inbox, but the Inbox is empty.

Exchange 5.5, sp4 with Outlook 97 on the client.

Here's what I've checked so far:

- It happens on any PC that connects to this mailbox.
- I've tried all the 'views' within Outlook, it's not a view problem.
- I've sent an Email to the mailbox, logged into the mailbox, it shows 2 unread, I mark mine as read, and it still shows 1 unread message.
- There are no subfolders of the Inbox that have unread messages.
- I couldn't find anything in Technet regarding this specific issue (big surprise there).

Do you guys have any ideas, or do I have to go to my last resort... Export all the mail from this mailbox, delete the mailbox, recreate the mailbox, import all the mail.

Thanks,
Vos [peace]

First Check to make sure he/she does not have any rules setup.

It sounds like the mail client was downloading an email to a pst file and it became corrupt. You can check the total ops for this person. I will probably be above 300. The quickest was is to Exmerge out the data, delete the account and create a new one.
Server - Private information store - logons add the total ops to the column from the view menu.

Thanks for the replies guys. Here's what I've found:

- There are no rules (Could you accomplish these symptoms with a rule?)
- The Total Ops for this mailbox was only 39.
- The mystery endures.

I've recreated the mailbox and the problem is gone.

Thanks for your input.

Interesting,

I guess when in doubt recreate the mailbox. My first guess was the view but you noted that it had nothing to do with the views. My second thought was the rules wizard. My 3rd thought would have been to recreate the profile but you eliminated that by noting you had the same problem on other workstation logging in as this profile.

Another Microsoft Mystery.

I had recently taken over a new position and their Exchange server had crashed before I had gotten there. Some of the mailboxes exibited the same symptoms but in my case the total ops was above 300 for 30 + users causing the server to work like a dog. The only thing we could do to resolve it was to delete the account and recreate it.
