Empty archive folders?

Outlook XP... What happens to my messages when it asks to archive and I say "yes"? When I open the archive, all the matching folders are there, but they are all empty. Their size is indicated as 0 KB when I look at their properties in Options.

Is the archive function just a fake? I'll not say Yes again because now I don't have a lot of my historical messages I had saved.
